What is 'letter recognition'?

Letter recognition refers to the ability to visually identify and name the letters of the alphabet.

Why it matters

Letter recognition is a foundational skill in early literacy development enabling children to identify and name letters, which is essential for learning phonics and the relationship between sounds and written symbols. It also enhances visual processing skills and will assist with spelling when children are ready to learn to write.

Activities using Cami's Reading

Match each upper-case letter to its corresponding lower-case letter. This could be a game of memory where players take turns turning over two cards at a time hoping to find a match and the person with the most pairs at the end is the winner.

  • Start by introducing lower-case letters and move on to upper-case.
  • Teaching alphabetic order provides children with a structural understanding of the alphabet, supporting later stages of reading and word recognition.
  • Incorporate hands-on activities such as tracing letters in sand or foam using fingers, make the letters from dough or play with foam letters or letter magnets, to add a multi-sensory element and strengthen their visual and tactile memory of each letter’s shape.
  • We recommend introducing letters that are visually similar (such as ‘b’ and ‘d’) be separated in beginning instruction.
